The name Red Tussock (Chionochloa rubra) comes from a local type of grasses that grow wild in the area. It is a hardy species that grows in areas where other species would fail to thrive, such as cold, wet or alpine conditions, but, it is doing a great job in these environments to keep the soil from eroding and absorbing extra water to prevent flooding. The tussock is also a food of the rare Takahē, a flightless bird synonymous to the Murchison Mountains located near Te Anau.
